Concrete Resurfacing & Overlays

Concrete resurfacing is the method of restoring damaged, stained, flaking, and pitted concrete using decorative Concrete Overlays. It has become a very popular procedure for home restoration, not only because it can give almost any concrete surface, indoors or out, a complete face-lift, but also because it costs much less than replacement. This concept is not new. It can be traced back to the 1960s when chemical companies discovered that acrylic paint resins where great modifiers for cement. During that time though, the technology lacked the quality of long-term performance. Acrylic resins proved to be short of being water resistant and lacked the adhesion necessary for permanent concrete resurfacing solutions.

Today, however, there are many new and better ways of resurfacing concrete. The method has evolved and has become useful not only for domestic floor restoration purposes but also for public roads and concrete bridges. Concrete overlays are now applied to these surfaces to keep them safe to travel through.

One great thing about concrete resurfacing is that it permanently covers up surface imperfections. Concrete overlays disguise cracks and other flaws as well as provide protection to make the concrete structurally sound.

For the home, concrete resurfacing methods provide multiple designs to choose from. One of the more popular concrete overlay procedures is the terrazzo, which is often used for roads, garages and locker rooms. In this procedure, images, logos and other artistic designs can be incorporated into the concrete using paint chips. When professionally applied, the overlay can withstand tremendous heat as well as freezing conditions. It is commonly used in driveways and even airport runways.

Another concrete resurfacing method is the stamped concrete overlay. This is very popular among homebuilders because the end results are always superior. Through this process, any concrete flooring can achieve the look of brick, granite, ashlars, cobblestone or even wood!

Concrete resurfacing provides a wide array of designs, making it a preferable choice for household restorations. However, it should always be applied with caution and proper knowledge. This is not a simple task. A skipped step or a simple missing item can amount to hundreds or even thousands of dollars lost in additional costs. Badly done overlays can cause damage the concrete, which could result to a repair mix. When not done right the first time, rework can be very costly.

It goes without saying that concrete resurfacing goes much more smoothly when it is done by an experienced contractor. An expert contractor will provide for the materials, the supplies and the necessary know-how to fulfill the job without flaws.
